Assignment 5!

Part 1

1. The article state that at least 45% or more Americans are in support of gay marriage. The reason this is so prevalent now is due to the major increase of support. In the past gay marriage was not supported as highly as it is today.
2. Proposition 8 was a law in California that would outlaw same-sex marriage. Prop 8 has been a long rollercoaster for same-sex California residents. In 2008 it was announced unconstitutional to discriminate against a group of people. People who disagreed with this quickly had their legislation passed to ban same-sex marriage. Now until the Ninth Circuit is reviewed marriages have stopped in California.
3. Marriage, to this amendment is described as "a legal union between one man and one woman".
4. Comparing Iowa and Texas, I can see that they are 2 opposing views. Texas has passed an amendment to ban gay marriage along with adapting DOMA. Iowa is more progressive. After it being illegal in the state, it was ruled unconstitutional and  overturned in 2009.
5. One change is that it is expected to make the wedding industry grow by hundreds of millions of dollars. Another change is that it will legitimize what should have been done a long time ago. Shop owners can now service their same sex couples.

Gary Gates is saying that there is a gap between same-sex marriage and heterosexual marriage that will eventually narrow.

Lesbians are more 2 times more likely to get married compared to gay men.

Some same-sex couples are not marrying because they are not going to receive the same rights in which they deserve. Many couples would like to wait until DOMA is repealed before they get married.
