Assignment 5!

Part 1


1. The article state that at least 45% or more Americans are in support of gay marriage. The reason this is so prevalent now is due to the major increase of support. In the past gay marriage was not supported as highly as it is today.
2. Proposition 8 was a law in California that would outlaw same-sex marriage. Prop 8 has been a long rollercoaster for same-sex California residents. In 2008 it was announced unconstitutional to discriminate against a group of people. People who disagreed with this quickly had their legislation passed to ban same-sex marriage. Now until the Ninth Circuit is reviewed marriages have stopped in California.
3. Marriage, to this amendment is described as "a legal union between one man and one woman".
4. Comparing Iowa and Texas, I can see that they are 2 opposing views. Texas has passed an amendment to ban gay marriage along with adapting DOMA. Iowa is more progressive. After it being illegal in the state, it was ruled unconstitutional and  overturned in 2009.
5. One change is that it is expected to make the wedding industry grow by hundreds of millions of dollars. Another change is that it will legitimize what should have been done a long time ago. Shop owners can now service their same sex couples.

Gary Gates is saying that there is a gap between same-sex marriage and heterosexual marriage that will eventually narrow.

Lesbians are more 2 times more likely to get married compared to gay men.

Some same-sex couples are not marrying because they are not going to receive the same rights in which they deserve. Many couples would like to wait until DOMA is repealed before they get married.

Assignment 4

1. Sex is biological term to describe someone as male or female. Gender is the social construction of a person that they identify with being either masculine or feminine.
2.I am doing gender when I do mechanical work on my car. Something that is very stereotypically masculine I do. I just do it because it's cheaper then having someone else work on my car.
3.
A)The researchers used an interview technique to collect their data. Their population was middle-school aged students. The sample size was 44 students.
B) The limitation to this is that even though the interview is interacting with the students, but you do not see the peer to peer interaction.
C)  They seemed to be very proactive in understanding that men and women should be equal, but when they were asked what would happen if they switched sexes, their responses were stereotypical of the opposite sex.
D) Girly-girls are very "LIKE Oh my gosh!" and very materialistic. The tomboy girls are described as sporty and tough. They exhibit masculine characteristics according to the students.
E) Well I definitely defend nurture! I believe that we learn how to act from school, family, and general society. We see gender in every aspect of life. Toys, stores, and clothes, we gender everything! I believe that children are curious and want to learn by exploring, but parents force their children to like certain things. For example, boys can't play with dolls because it is a "girl" thing. Personally I believe boys and girls should be allowed to choose what they want to play with.  As it relates on a macro level, toy stores enforce gendered colors by making their products darker for boys and using more pastels for girls. Boys and girls are very separated when it comes to toys. As far as schools are concerned, boys are not affirmed for playing dress up, while girls

6. I believe women have progressed as time goes on, but women are still entering the workforce so I wouldn't be surprised if these numbers eventually increased.

Assignment 3

1. The "instrumental" leader would take the lead on discussions and guide it so the assign tasked was accomplished. The "expressive" leader was the emotional support who kept the groups spirit up with jokes and positive remarks. The role of the husband was associated with the instrumental leader, while the wife was associated with the expressive leader. 
2. During this time women started entering the workforce and as a result the breadwinner family lost it's "dominant position" in society. This ultimately would change how the instrumental and expressive leaders would change in the household.
3. Conflict Theory focuses on power, control, or dominance over another individual or a group of people. This theory also wants to focus on the elimination over this dominance among individuals.4.Exchange theory is based off of ecology. Husbands have money to exchange for their wives taking care of the children and household duties. 5. Feminist theory is based on the inequality faced by women from a male dominated society. Feminist theory strives to bring about equality among both genders.

A) Does having a higher level of education make your relationship more or less satisfactory 
B) MicroC) I would most likely use participant observation because it would be better to actually watch a relationship develop.
D). Since I would to have participants, I realize that I may have to research a small amount of people. Perhaps 10 couples.
E) What was your relationship before you received a degree?after? Have you and your partner received the same level of education? Do you spend the same amount of time with your partner now as you did before earning your degree?
